১৯৩৮ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে কিশােরগঞ্জ জেলায় 'পূর্ব ময়মনসিংহ সাহিত্য সম্মিলনীর একাদশ অধিবেশনে ডক্টর মুহম্মদ শহীদুল্লাহ্ সভাপতিত্ব করেন। এ সম্মেলনে সভাপতি হিসেবে তিনি যে অভিভাষণ দেন তারই পুনর্লিখিত রূপ এই 'পল্লিসাহিত্য প্রবন্ধটি।

আন্তর্জাতিক খ্যাতিসম্পন্ন ভাষাবিজ্ঞানী মুহম্মদ শহীদুল্লাহ্ এর বিখ্যাত প্রবন্ধ পল্লিসাহিত্য'। এ প্রবন্ধ প্রাবন্ধিক পল্লিসাহিত্য সংরক্ষণের গুরুত্ব, তাৎপর্য, প্রয়ােজনীয়তা এবং পল্লিসাহিত্যের সৌন্দর্য চমৎকারভাবে বিভিন্ন তথ্যে উপস্থাপনের মাধ্যমে তুলে ধরেছেন। পল্লিসাহিত্য প্রতিটি জাতির ঐতিহ্য, সংস্কৃতি। গ্রামের অশিক্ষিত, স্বল্পশিক্ষিত মানুষের মনের আবেগ ও তাগিদে রচিত সাহিত্য হচ্ছে পল্লিসাহিত্য। এ সাহিত্য তেমন গুরুত্বের সাথে সংগৃহীত হয়নি, এমনকি অনেক সাহিত্য গ্রন্থাকারে বা পুঁথি আকারেও পাওয়া যাচ্ছে না, সংগ্রহ করতে হচ্ছে মানুষের মুখ থেকে।
তাই এ সাহিত্য হারিয়ে যাচ্ছে বা রচয়িতার রচনার বাইরে কথকের কথাও ঢুকে যাচ্ছে। অথচ পল্লির এ সাহিত্য ছিল অত্যন্ত সমৃদ্ধ। পল্লির আনাচে-কানাচে ছড়িয়ে আছে এ সাহিত্য। কিন্তু এ সাহিত্য সংরক্ষণ করার উদ্যোগ নেই। যেহেতু এ সাহিত্যের একটি বিশাল অংশ মানুষের মুখে মুখে, সেহেতু কালের বিবর্তনে মানুষ হারিয়ে যাওয়ার সাথে সাথে হারিয়ে যাচ্ছে এ সাহিত্য। এ সাহিত্য যদি গুরুত্বের সাথে সংরক্ষণ না করা হয়, তবে ধীরে ধীরে এর অফুরন্ত ভাণ্ডার শূন্য হয়ে যাবে। বর্তমান সভ্যতায় উন্নত দেশ তথা যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও পাশ্চাত্যের দেশগুলােতে তাদের গণসাহিত্য সংরক্ষণের ব্যবস্থা করেছে। কিন্তু আমাদের তা করা হয়নি। তাই আমাদের ঐতিহ্য, সংস্কৃতি রক্ষা করার জন্য আজ উপযুক্ত গবেষক ও সাহিত্য মনীষীদের উদ্যোগ ও যথার্থ চেষ্টা একান্ত প্রয়ােজন। প্রাবন্ধিক পল্লিসাহিত্যের সৌন্দর্যের কথা বলতে গিয়ে মৈমনসিংহ গীতিকার কথা বলেছেন।
পল্লির পরতে পরতে ছড়িয়ে থাকা অফুরন্ত সাহিত্যসম্ভার আজ আমাদের অবহেলায় বিলুপ্তির পথে। এ সাহিত্যসম্ভার উপযুক্ত গবেষক কর্তৃক সংরক্ষণ করা আবশ্যক।
