River Erosion.
Answer : Bangladesh is a riverine country and the rivers influence the minds of the people living along the river banks. Nature in her varying moods appears to have conditioned the temperament of the people. The mighty rivers and their turbulent currents, devastating soil erosion and the high fertility of the silt-soil gather together to make these people active, prone to violent outburst of passion. River erosion is one of the main dangers caused by climate change and it is a harsh reality for the people living along the river bank. The rivers, during the monsoon, assume a terrible shape and consume the land, houses and other property in a minute. The course of rivers swallow all the belongings of the people and compel them to leave their ancestor's land. Finding no other alternative to survive, they decide to move to the city and start living on footpaths, around the railway station and slums. Here they start their new life as porters, rickshaw pullers, brick breakers, garment workers and maid servants. Those who are unable to work take to begging. Their children being deprived of education engage themselves in collecting paper and polythene, selling flower garland, etc. Some engage themselves in anti-social activities. Due to river erosion all these happen and our social life is hampered.

বঙ্গানুবাদ : বাংলাদেশ একটি নদীমাতৃক দেশ এবং নদীগুলি নদীর তীরে বসবাসকারী মানুষের মনকে প্রভাবিত করে। তার বিভিন্ন মেজাজে প্রকৃতি মানুষের মেজাজকে শর্তযুক্ত বলে মনে হয়। শক্তিশালী নদী এবং তাদের অশান্ত স্রোত, ধ্বংসাত্মক মাটির ক্ষয় এবং পলি-মাটির উচ্চ উর্বরতা এই লোকগুলিকে সক্রিয় ও আবেগের সহিংস উত্সাহের প্রবণ করতে একত্রিত হয়। জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনজনিত অন্যতম প্রধান বিপদ নদীভাঙন এবং এটি নদীর তীরে বসবাসকারী মানুষের পক্ষে একটি কঠোর বাস্তবতা। নদীগুলি, বর্ষার সময়গুলি ভয়াবহ আকার ধারণ করে এবং এক মিনিটের মধ্যে জমি, ঘর এবং অন্যান্য সম্পত্তি গ্রাস করে। নদীর গতিপথগুলি মানুষের সমস্ত জিনিস গিলে ফেলে এবং তাদের পূর্বপুরুষদের জমি ছেড়ে দিতে বাধ্য করে। বেঁচে থাকার জন্য অন্য কোনও বিকল্প খুঁজে না পেয়ে তারা এই শহরে চলে যাওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নেয় এবং রেলস্টেশন এবং বস্তির আশেপাশে ফুটপাথে বাস শুরু করে। এখানে তারা তাদের নতুন জীবন যাত্রী, রিকশা চালক, ইট ভাঙা, গার্মেন্টস শ্রমিক এবং দাসী চাকর হিসাবে তাদের নতুন জীবন শুরু করে। যাঁরা কাজ করতে পারছেন না তারা ভিক্ষা করেন। তাদের শিশুরা পড়াশোনা থেকে বঞ্চিত হচ্ছেন তারা কাগজ এবং পলিথিন সংগ্রহ, ফুলের মালা বিক্রি ইত্যাদিতে নিজেকে নিযুক্ত করেন। কেউ কেউ নিজেকে অসামাজিক কার্যকলাপে জড়িত। নদীভাঙনের ফলে এগুলি ঘটে এবং আমাদের সামাজিক জীবন বাধাগ্রস্ত হয়।
